The recent wildfire devastation that ran through some of our most beloved Los Angeles communities and resulted in large-scale, unimaginable losses did not go unaddressed by the mental health community. Even more heartening was the call to action by those, both affected and unaffected, who volunteered and continue to volunteer time, goods, living spaces, emotional support, and hope. Rebuilding will no doubt take time, compassion, resources, and expected bumps. Mental health services to assist in navigating what will be ongoing “gut punches” to those who have lost are available in abundance. Please contact us directly with your specific needs so we may best coordinate assistance.

In this blog and attached emotional first aid kit, we offer guidance regarding establishing physical and emotional safety, focusing on priorities, finding balance, focusing on self-care, self-monitoring, honesty, honoring all feelings, relying on usual routines and structure, remaining connected and social, and working with school teams to partner in the best interests of our children. We additionally highlight pitfalls to avoid that may only heighten already overwhelming feelings and offer suggestions to aid in supporting family members with neurodivergence. Please reach out with any specific questions. We are here and will hold space.
